Message Through Time: The Photographs of Emma D. Sewall 1836-1919 Emma Sewall was one Maine's earliest female photographers, and featured in Maine Maritime Museum's exhibit Women Behind the Lens. Emma relished capturing scenes of everyday life in and around Phippsburg. She took most of her pictures between 1884 and 1899, and exhibited and took awards with The Boston Camera Club and the Photo-Club of Paris. Though Sewall led a privileged life, her photographs show people doing everyday things-women quilting, farmers cutting and hauling hay, clam diggers raking the mud, lobstermen pulling their traps, children walking along the rocky coastline, and beautiful character studies -- particularly her prizewinning shot of an old woman reading by candlelight.

Abbie Sewall has lovingly put together this book detailing her great great grandmother's work. Images from text. Deluxe Numbered Limited Edition Cloth Bound with Slipcover. Autographed Copy
