Made in New England from resin, and beautifully made in keeping with the scrimshaw tradition. The polymer used to produce this product captures all the fine detailed etching of the original design. A mold is made of the original piece and then an open cast pour of the resin mixture. The pieces are removed from the mold and sanded and inked, then placed on their size appropriate findings. Completely hand finished. A Velcro belt clip comes with each knife.
The stainless steel blade locks in place when open. Dimensions with the blade closed are 3.00" x 0.96" x 0.55". The blade itself is approximately 2.35" making the total length of the knife with an open blade 5.35".
Scrimshaw artist Linda Layden has been making beautiful works can be found in galleries and museums across the world. She developed an interest in scrimshaw after viewing a collection belonging to journalist Roger Hawthorne, who traveled with Admiral Bird on an expedition to Antarctica. In 1971, after becoming interested in the whaling era and the natural materials used, she began making scrimshaw items for friends and family. She specialized in wildlife and scenic motifs. Soon after, her work was being commissioned by art lovers and collectors. The rest is history.
