Start your day with a sip of determination. "Don't give up the ship" was uttered by Captain James Lawrence as his last dying command during a battle in the War of 1812. He was the captain of the USS Chesapeake when it engaged the British HMS Shannon on June 1, 1813. Lawrence was mortally wounded in the battle and, as he was carried below decks, he told his crew, "Don't give up the ship," Although the British ultimately captured the Chesapeake, Lawrence's words inspired his friend and fellow naval officer, Oliver Hazard Perry, who later had a flag made with the phrase "Don't Give Up the Ship". This phrase became a rallying cry for the U.S. Navy and has been used throughout history as a testament to perseverance and courage.
